John Klein, Founder and Principal. John, a service disabled veteran, has over 30 years of experience in the commercial real estate, financing, construction, and energy efficiency industries. John has been directly involved in over 300 million dollars of commercial real estate projects. He has leveraged his network of contacts with CEOs and CFOs of leading commercial real estate organizations on behalf of the US EPA in fulfilling the ENERGY STAR mission of market transformation. John has recruited over two billion square feet of commercial real estate into ENERGY STAR, and effectively communicated the message linking financial and environmental performance. He regularly provides strategy and direction to the largest owners, managers, and brokers of commercial real estate. John developed and owns an eco-tourism resort that incorporates energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable technologies. Additionally, John was awarded two U.S. Patents as a result of developing technology for energy and water-efficient geothermal heat pumps, and on-site fire protection, water storage and distribution systems. John has published various articles and is a co-author of the “A Practical Guide to Energy Management and Enhancing the Bottom Line” from the Institute of Real Estate Management. He is the founder of the National Center for Responsible Development and has served as an expert witness and testified before the U.S. Congress. John has held real estate brokers licenses in four Mid-Atlantic States and is a certified real estate instructor in 13 states.
Deborah Cloutier, Prinicpal. Deb has over 16 years of experience providing consulting services in the areas of commercial real estate, energy management, environmental consulting, marketing, communications, and industry trade associations. On behalf of the US EPA, Deb works with owners, managers, and asset advisors of over four billion square feet of commercial real estate. She develops market-based strategies to link environmental and financial performance for public and private corporations. Deb has extensive experience in developing national market transformation programs, curriculum development, training, strategic market differentiation and brand positioning tactics. She has designed tools and software to assist and motivate decision makers to make profitable investments in energy performance improvements and has launched highly successful marketing and communications campaigns. Deb has published dozens of articles and papers and authored a chapter on Energy Management in the “Design, Operations, and Maintenance of Building Systems” textbook from the Building Owners and Managers Institute. Ms. Cloutier is the co-founder and Principal of Real Estate Technologies Group which focuses on the integration of energy, real estate, and environmental issues. She was also recently awarded the prestigious BOMA Chairman's Award, given to sustainability visionaries who set new standards of excellence in the commercial real estate industry.
Dr. Sharon Levin, CPA, Director of Corporate Training. Sherri has provided consulting services on behalf of the US EPA for the past five years and has over 18 years of experience in accounting, finance, and organizational development in addition to extensive experience developing, preparing, and instructing curricula . She was certified as a distance educator when distance education was in its infancy, and develops curriculum for and teaches business courses using that format. For ENERGY STAR, Sherri participated in the development of curriculum to be used for online trainings and delivers these trainings on an ongoing basis. Sherri has a Doctorate in Organizational Development from George Washington University, an MBA in International Business from Loyola College, a Financial Accounting Certificate from Anne Arundel Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in Health, Science and Policy for the University of Maryland.
Sam Gibson, Senior Consultant. Sam spent over 25 years in the property management and development arena with Hines, a prestigious international property management firm. As a Senior Engineering Manager and MEP Construction Manager, he has been responsible for the engineering operations and the MEP coordinator of millions square feet of class A commercial space. He was responsible for the development of staff, energy reduction and management, safety compliance, equipment operation and life cycle preservation, new construction and development, and development and control of mechanical and utility operating budgets in multiple regions across the United States. He has deep experience with ENERGY STAR benchmarking for energy and water, as well as other benchmarking protocols for operations and waste production. Sam has expertise in performing due diligence for property acquisitions. He is a leader in providing continuous training and development of building staff. Sam is considered one of the top engineers in the United States and has received multiple recognitions for the creation of best practices, critical and creative thinking and program development. He received his formal education from West Virginia State College.
Kyle Patterson, MBA, LEED AP, Director of Research. Kyle has over 7 years experience in energy management and has worked with the US EPA in developing and implementing the market transformation program - ENERGY STAR. Kyle is highly adept at the use of tools and resources to improve the energy and financial performance of commercial real estate. He has extensive experience in environmental science, environmental law, risk management, environmental business strategy, and project management. He also has developed and conducted trainings, marketing and outreach campaigns, and implemented energy-efficiency measures in millions of square feet of real estate. Kyle earned an MBA from the University of California, Irvine with an emphasis in Corporate Environmental Management and a BA in Environmental Geology from Colgate University.
Alison Drucker, LEED AP, Analyst. Alison has several years of experience in environmental management, corporate strategy , and market analysis . At JDM, Alison helps commercial real estate clients establish and implement sustainability programs , focusing on policies, training, and communications . In addition, she manages various writing projects on behalf of association and government clients, including publications on industry best practices and materials for public outreach campaigns. Alison graduated cum laude with a BA in Public Policy Studies from Duke University.
Bruce Armstrong, Analyst. Bruce’s background is in corporate environmental strategy and private sector approaches to sustainable development. He has several years experience in sustainable hospitality and real estate development in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Bruce brings strong skills in cost-effective resource management and quantitative analysis to JDM, where he focuses on improving the environmental and financial performance of residential and commercial buildings. He graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Applied Economics and Management from Cornell University.
Kirk Vizzier, Analyst. Kirk’s background is in national and international climate and energy policy with a focus on emissions trading markets and investment in clean energy technologies. Kirk has worked in the non-profit and private sectors on energy issues and international business development and brings expertise in carbon markets and cost analysis to JDM. He supports the development of sustainability programs throughout real estate portfolios and analyzes the environmental and financial performance of commercial buildings. Kirk has a Master of Arts in Global Environmental Policy from American University and a BS in Finance from Louisiana Tech University.
Drew Yetter, MLA, LEED AP, Analyst. With several years design experience, Drew brings a strong background in landscape architecture, ecology, energy efficient design, and financial analysis to JDM, where he supports all aspects of green building design, development, and certification. He graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Landscape Horticulture from the University of Delaware and BLA/MLA in Landscape Architecture from Penn State University.
Jaana Martin, Analyst. Jaana brings experience in economic analysis, program evaluation, and market research. From her background in healthcare consulting, she is well-versed in economic modeling, cost and benefit evaluations, and benchmarking. She has co-authored a number of publications in nationally recognized peer-reviewed journals, and contributed to benchmark studies on the cost of disease and provision of services. Jaana graduated from the George Washington University, in Washington, D.C., with degrees in Economics and International Affairs.
Kendall Sanderson, Analyst. Kendall has a background in environmental management and restoration, organic agriculture, sustainable development, renewable energy, project management and communications. She has worked in the non-profit, private and government sectors and was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya. Kendall graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in French from Florida State University and a Master of Science in Ecology from the University of Florida.
